Getting drunk on CUPTAILS

For the longest time I have been hearing about these fabulous cocktail-based cupcakes called CUPTAILS and today I finally had a chance to get my hands on one. Catching the last weekend of the Powerplant Pastry Fair, I wanted to see for myself if this Cuptails phenomenon was just another novelty idea which didn't translate into yummy. Boy was I in for a sweet surprise. Imagine tasty cupcakes with a subtle hint of liquor playfully topped with heavenly frosting and cocktail elements. I regret ordering only one for myself (diet diet pa kuno =p). I had the Margarita while Pau got the Screaming O. There's also a Cosmopolitan, Tequila Sunrise, Pina Colada and Mojito -- flavors which I imagine I will be munching on tomorrow.

Cupcakes are sold at P55/piece and the serving size is just right. Its easier on the conscience(and the wallet!) than the P100 cupcakes in Serendra. If youre under 18, or pretending to be a minor, they also have the regular flavored cupcakes (vanilla, mocha, chocolate etc...).

Below are photos and captions I grabbed from their Flickr site. Orders can be sent to or

Earlier today, my friend and I decided to have our merienda at our neighborhood ministop in Salcedo Village. When she was paying for her fruit cup, she noticed a cockroach inside the Hot Loops shelf beside the cashier counter and pointed this out quickly to the miss. The cashier must have thought my friend was joking because she just smiled and did nothing about it. They took so long to react to the situation I still had time to get my phone, stand in front of the shelf and take a picture of it.

hmm what could that thing in the red spot be?

Ahh its only an itsy bitsy cockroach...

On a similar note, another ministop/hot loops sanitation incident happened to me a few months back. This time I was in the Abs-cbn branch. Since ministop is a self-service establishment, all patrons are expected to heat their own food items, serve themselves drinks or make their own instant noodles. All you need to do is pay for whatever item you intend to consume and the cashier gives you whatever utensils you need. At that time I had paid for my donut so I was handed a plastic sleeve and sheets of tissue. As I using the tongs to get my snack, it slipped and my donut fell to the floor. I asked the cashier if I could replace it for free. She said it was ok but this time she asked one of the staff the handle the tongs(fearing I might repeat the same incident). It was all good because I got to replace my donut but the clincher was this... they put the donut back on the shelf! tsk tsk tsk I just had to walk out of there shaking my head.

Another way to cash in on the UAAP

I have to give it to the marketing person of Krispy Kreme for launching a different way to cash in on the already overadvertised and oversponsored UAAP. Genius! Talk about customizing products for your target (and talk about capitalistic abuse of school spirit) I'm sure a lot of suckers for fall for this one. Me included! =p BLUE EAGLE THE KING (umm...did I just say that?)

Hi Friend of Krispy Kreme!

UAAP Men’s Basketball Final Four just got better and sweeter with ---

The new UAAP FINAL FOUR DOUGHNUTS --- Enjoy a rich chocolate dipped doughnut, topped with sprinkles of your favorite team’s color –
UE Red Warriors, DLSU Green Archers, ADMU Blue Eagles and UST Growling Tigers.

Check out the tally that will be posted in our stores - Bonifacio High Street, SM Megamall and Greenhills! Support your team
. Grab a dozen before the big game!

A possibly offensive first impression

Have you ever had that activity where a group of you sit in a circle, pass around a sheet of paper and write something about the person whose sheet you get? I recently attended this teambuilding organized for all client partners who made us do just that. I don't really mind the activity because I've done this before in the past with Hangad, but it was weird this time because I had to write something about someone I just knew for a day. But anyway, for the sake of participation, I wrote down my sincerest generic wishes for my partners. Stuff like "Hope to work with you soon", "Great to know you're on the team" and "keep sharing your ideas". When I got my sheet back, I expected the same stuff and I was right. It seems like everybody wrote each other the same way:

"I look forward to working with you. You seem to have a lot of marketing experience"

"Don't know you that well but I look forward to working with you"

"Really friendly. Good team player. Looking forward to working with you, again!"

But I got something which I didn't expect:

"Looks like a GEEK in school..."

Wa..wa..what was that? I don't mind being called a geek at all but from someone I barely know? It was just...funny in a weird. On one hand I feel offended because I've just been judged to my face by someone who just met me. On the other, I can let it slip because the one who wrote it didn't seem like she mastered the language anyway. Maybe she was just looking for a word to say "intelligent looking" or "serious looking" or "nerd" Haha

I'm probably wasting cyberspace by blogging about this pathetic incident but I just had to share it. Geek isnt something I hear said in my face everynow and then.

Whatever happened to party weekends?

Is it a function of age when you feel you'd rather spend Saturday nights at home rather than out partying?

In my early twenties I used to feel restless and pathetic spending Saturday nights at home. It just didn't feel right being stuck with a book or the TV when I could be making new friends, dancing all night and drowning myself in alcohol. My weekend ritual would kick off with a couple of drinks at 10pm, followed by dancing, people watching, more drinking, socializing (or cruising =p) from midnight till early morning. At around 4am or when the crowd started to disappear, me and whoever I ended up with would head for the beach and catch the sunrise, have Tapsilog breakfast or buy a bottle of Lambanog and crash at a buddy's house. Wow!
Looking back at it now, I'm surprised I had that kind of energy to last all night. I'm also surprised I didn't turn to be an alcoholic (or tested std positive for that matter haha!). Oh yes. Those were the days (TRANSLATION: I'm old and reminiscing my wasted youth).

I don't know why but I don't even look for those kinds of nights out anymore. The last time I partied everybody looked younger than me and that's not exactly a good feeling =( I still enjoy the music though. I don't think that's something that will change soon. But now instead of it being blasted away from larger than life speakers and getting confused between the thumping bass and your heartbeat, I'd rather listen to them at home and get lost in my own world by myself. I'm the DJ now and there won't be any lousy beats or dead air in this party.

So whatever happened to party weekends? They're now tambay at a friend's house, quiet dinner dates and quality time at home. I have become what I deemed as pathetic in my younger years and I'm enjoying every minute of it.

We are linked by INSPIRATION

Inspiration does not need to come from the extraordinary. Just look around you and it reveals itself differently everyday. Whether its an image of a beautiful sunset, a starlit sky, your baby's laughter, an empty cathedral, your highschool barkada picture, an old song or a beautiful piece of art, share to the world what inspires you. Post an image or a video in and INSPIRE OTHERS WITH YOUR INSPIRATION.

Learning about Cebuano food from a non-Cebuano

I came across this article today in by Micky Fenix entitled "Tasting Cebu once again". It was so enlightening because it made me realize how interesting Cebuano cuisine was. I know of the usual lechon, chicharon, puso, danggit and tinowa but barracuda, eel, sea urchin, stingray and sea cucumber dishes? Man I gotta try those on my next trip home.

Great beer

I've always liked the San Miguel Beer commercials but the "Great move, great beer" campaign running now is definitely the coolest so far. I wonder how much San Miguel got Jet Li for? I hope the campaign's regional. Sayang naman if they got such a big name endorser for a local run.

And since we're on the topic, let me just add my next favorite San Miguel ad. If Jet Li was for star power, then this one combines both star power and values(values?!). Stig pare! =p

Star white skin?

What is it with our continuous obsession with whiter skin? Can't we have a local celebrity who endorses dark skin? With Belo now in the market, I wonder how the industry will react considering there are already a lot of brands out there promising the same result (Hmm I just realized I can name at least 5 other brands right this minute. it just shows how crowded the market is). But then again, Belo does have the advantage of being a name synonymous to celebrity beauty and to our celebrity worshipping majority, Zsa Zsa, Lucy and Regine might just give them a little bit more convincing power to buy the product. Oh the powers of Marketing!

Shampoo commercial without the hair

Can you imagine advertising shampoo without showing the hair? I guess for us in the Philippines, that would be next to impossible. How else can we communicate the smoothness...the softness...the silkiness of long black Filipina hair? Pano na lang si Mother Ricky Reyes? Paano na lang ang kering keri ni Kimchu at ang shine ni Ruffa? hahaha

Here's a Malaysian commercial for Sunsilk. I guess in countries where a little bit of hair is a religious offense, advertisers have to get creative.

So did you find yourself waiting for the scene where she whips off her long hair from under the headscarf? Or how about the scene where the camera zooms on her scalp to focus on the health of her roots? Ahh... imagination my friend. This is what the ad is all about =p

New advertising gimick from Nokia

Nokia tabs on the outer edges of PS

Nokia has a new way of getting its message across - newspaper tabs. I don't know if any other advertiser has had an execution like this before but it definitely is creative and subtle. It stands out from the clutter of print ads without being too in-your-face compared to a special section or a false cover. I also find it very sophisticated and targetted to a certain profile of Nokia users. The choice of media and copy is clear and doesn't deviate from the brand's positioning as a mobile brand that is practical both for work and for play. Bravo!

And the countdown begins

Let the countdown to Christmas begin! For us in Hangad, its back to relearning old songs and learning fresh compositions and arrangements. In a couple of months it'll be the season again for mall shows, carollings and Simbang Gabi. Fun times!

In the next couple of weeks I should be uploading Chirstmas stuff in my Multiply account and YouTube channel so if you've been following my media archives, this should be exciting =)

stronger than Viagra

Bull penis is supposedly more effective than Viagra. I came across this National Geographic video of a Taiwanese chef preparing the extraordiary meal. I couldn't embed the video from the site so click here to check it out.
