Rediscovering Sungka

Even if my formative years were influenced by Mr. Atari, Nintendo and Sega, I still grew up playing a couple of traditional Filipino games like tubig-tubig, buwan-buwan, jolen and sungka (names are in Cebuano. Ambot lang kung unsay tinagalog ana nila). Whenever my cousins from Zamboanga would visit me in Cebu, they would always have a new game to teach me. Like there was this one game which involved rubber bands, sticks and a pile of dirt or tambis-tambis where you sit and chant in a circle while holding each others ears or ant fighting wherein you pick two army ants and make them fight till one bites the other's head off(Cruel. Yes. On second thought I learned this one from my dad).

I think I abandoned all Filipino games in favor of all things electronic (starting with my first Game & Watch) when I entered grade 3. Fastforward to 20 years later and I find myself sitting in front a sungka. It was so funny because I could not remember the rules on how to play it. All I had were memories of me and my parents playing the game using jolen instead of shells. Fortunately, the information was available online(Of course! Is there anything NOT on the internet these days?) c/o Global Pinoy.

The website defines

"a traditional Filipino Game played by two participants. The objective of the game is to amass stones or cowrie shells in the player’s home base (bahay) by continuously distributing the shells around smaller holes until the player runs out of shells to distribute. The person who collects the most shells in his or her bahay wins."

In the end I still did not get to play the game because everyone else were too busy(HUHU!) but I did learn the mechanics for the second time in my life, for all its worth, and it brought back a lot of happy times.

Experiencing a Disney MTV

It was a very cloudy day(or a very blusterry day as Pooh would have it) when I set out for my jog this morning. It looked like it was raining on the main island across the sea and the dark clouds were heading in my direction, but I set off anyway. The beach had lesser people than usual and my tunes kept my sweating until Station 2. On my way back to Station 1, it started to drizzle. I thought of jogging faster or risk getting my iPod wet. Kebs. Its wonderful feeling the rain on your skin once in a while. When I finally reached the resort, I settled in one of the cabanas and as if on cue, the following happened in order:

1.) Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield started playing on my Nano
2.) A patch of sunlight appeared out of nowhere
3.) The rain stopped
4.) A rainbow appeared

What the...? I couldn't help but laugh out loud. Especially in the chorus when Natasha goes...

"Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your innovations
Feel the rain on your skin

Talk about being forced into the middle of a Disney channel feel good MTV! I was waiting for butterflies to appear, Bambi to start frolicking on the beach and Natasha Bedingfield dancing with the cast of Highschool Musical ala Pinoy 80's movie...

Haha I'm not that cynical. It did Ordinary miracles I guess(cue music. Barbra Streisand)

Playing with my PKE meter

Boracay, for all its hype as a telco playground, does not have a strong internet provider. Globe entered the scene a couple of years back with an extensive Wi-Fi mesh but was unable to sustain it. Airborne tried to play the game but as one technician on the island described it, it was merely reselling Globe's signal. Resorts who subscribed to Airborne also had supply issues with their cards. Then there's this other player - Kalibo Cable...Um, Kalibo, as a brand, does not translate to high-tech. Need I say more?

Anyway, most resorts on the island have resorted (hmm that's nice...) to installing Wi-Fi routers and opening up their broadband connections to whoever wanted access. I discovered this a few nights back when I was hanging out in the cabana and my phone started to recognize a strong signal displayed only as "Linksys". I tried connecting to it and the speed was pretty good until a power outage occurred (there are at least 2 blackouts on the island every night) and I couldn't get through anymore.

Last night, I wanted to tap into it again because the fixed connection sucked (fyi the signal was from the neighboring resort hehehe). I tried accessing it from the same spot I discovered it but the signal wasn't as strong anymore. Desperate for Wi-Fi(and entertainment!), I started walking through the frontages of all Station 1 resorts with my phone in front of me, looking for an open access connection. Remember the days when Globe signal wasn't
as good and you had to raise your 5110(5110!!!) in the air to send an SMS? I was doing exactly the same but in this case I was looking for Wi-Fi. From Las Bresas to Willy's Rock (and listen carefully all you Wi-Fi geeks out there) the Linksys signal was medium to strong from Las Bresas to White House. Sea Wind's Wi-Fi did not reach the beachfront (though I think they have open access within the lobby). Pear's connection was the weakest from the beachfront. Waling-waling had medium strength and Nigi Nigi Nu Noos had a secure access with Kalibo Cable. Willy's... well, let's just say the resort does not look like the type where one can find Wi-Fi and truly enough there was no signal available.

So what's a PKE meter? Remember Ghostbusters? "A PKE meter is a handheld device, used in locating and measuring
Psycho-Kinetic Energy, which is a unique environmental byproduct emitted by ghosts." (Thanks Wikipedia!) I had never felt more like E
gon Spengler than going on my quest for Wi-Fi last night. And just in case you were wondering what mobile phone I was using to look for signal, think Gary Oldman :)

Holy Blue Grail

I've found the Holy Grail and it brought me to heaven.

It started with me being unable to sleep at 1 am.

"I need a drink...and maybe some action"

After surveying the crowds in 2 clubs, I decided Im better off on my own with the stars. I got myself the legendary blue shaker and paid a deposit for my HUGE tumbler.

"This is it! Huling araw na ng shaker"

I headed for the resort roofdeck and found beauty under a blanket of stars (Too bad I only had my mobile phone to capture the momment. All you see in the photo is just a speck of light).

Who would have thought the key to heaven was a blue liquid inside some plastic tumbler.

Fitness routine kuno

I told myself I should

have some sort of fitness routine while im stranded on the island so I attempted to jog this mornign along the beach. Let me tell you, jogging inside the gym with a treadmill doesn't compare to anything like this!!! See the early morning beach pics in this entry, its a far cry from watching cars drive through the ayala loop from my machine in Gold's. Although I lasted only 30 mins from Sur to a couple of meters past d'mall, it was one of the best jogs I've ever had...Hmm can't say naman I've had lots haha. I can't wait to do it again tommorow!

Kung tatamarin ako tom I can always try out Tita Inday's Time Works machine hehehe. In fact, maybe I should give it a go tonight in the rooftop. Hmm....

Do not trust the Rubber Duckie!

I just want to share a techie disaste which happened to my bestbuddy over the weekend. Placing his oys inside the waterproof Rubber Duckie bag, he want for a swim in the open Bora waters. Turns out the bag was not as "waterproof" as promised. In the process he lost an iPod Nano, iPod 80GB Video, Canon Powershot SD450 and Sony Ericsson K610i.

Swapping skyline with starlight

It just hit me, while walking to Jonah's to grab a Mocha Rhum shake, I realized that for the next 15 days, I won't have to go through EDSA traffic and in sit in the car for an hour just to get home. I don't need to be greeted with the smog line on my bedroom window when I get up in the morning or the busy makati skyline when I go to bed. I don't need to endure the 2 seasons between a freezing corporate office and a swletering Ayala sidewalk. Yes. I'm really here in Boracay and it took me 4 days to realize that. Kinda gives you the idea how much of a city kid I am.

Theres more than just the beach in Boracay

Of course the first thing that comes into your head when you hear "Boracay" is the beach - or it might be the sand, the sunset or the parties but how about food? No, I'm not talking about chori-burgers or Jonah's fruit shakes. I'm talking about real good food like authentic Mediterrenean cuisine, freshly baked pastries and home-cooked Filipino meals. If you're an advocate of the slow food movement, then Boracay is your paradise in more ways than one. The island is one of the last popular places in the Philippines without an established fast food chain (but rumor has it a "clown" will soon set up shop). This means quick meals don't have to be decided between hamburger plus fries and fried chicken. The multicultural community who also settled on the island opened several restaurants introducing Filipinos to their local recipies, flavors and cuisines. In the following days, I'll try to visit as many of these "good food" places and write about them. Food trip kung food trip!

Leaving for the beach

Two days more and I'll be leaving this...for this!!!

The beach will do me good. I've been experiencing a lot of negative energy around me recently and it's starting to show on my face. Thank god for Clean & Clear pimple gel =p

I'm usually pretty tolerant when it comes to people.
80% of the ones I know I've no strong feelings for, 19% I like hanging around with, .5% I love with all my heart and .5% I hate to death.

Its fine if the latter .5% does not enter your consciousness from time to time but what if he's in your head day in and day out, not because you put him there, but because he's someone you deal with everyday directly or indirectly? Arrrgh. Don't you just wish you can delete certain people from your memory?

Grateful Dead

Let May 5 be known as the day Mr. James Arthur died alone, pathetic and unloved. No funeral service will be held in his honor. Friends or the few who wish to pay their last respects are requested to organize a party with food and free flowing booze. No tears, but cheers should be said in his memory. His ashes will be recycled and turned into a light scented soap to be distributed to whoever asks.

YM Busy

Why do some people go online on Yahoo Messenger and have a "busy" status? Doesn't this contradict the reason why he went online in the first place? If you do not want to be disturbed then shut down your freakin YM or go on invisi mode. Other people use YM to stay in touch not to be out of touch. Some even have that "I'm on SMS" status. Yahoo should disable that function. You know what's worse, people who complain about being messaged while they were on "Busy" status. What do you expect. DUH!

Talk about being blown away! Blake's "You Give Love A Bad Name" made American Idol history. This will be written down in the books together with La Toya London's "All By Myself", Bo Bice's "In a Dream" and Fantasia's "Summertime". Who ever thought a Bon Jovi song could sound this fresh? I think this is what the producers should be looking for - someone original, daring and knows his kind of music. I still don't know if I'm switching from Camp Jordin though. I feel like the dude doesn't need to win American Idol. He can cut a record now and sell a cool million copies the next day.

If you're reading this through my blogspot then check out my Blake playlist =)
